Join Riverkeeper and the Randall’s Island Park Alliance to make NYC shine as part of the Ocean Conservancy’s Annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) on Saturday, September 19. In 2014, 560,000 volunteers in 91 countries picked up more than 16 million pounds of trash during as part of ICC. The data collected during these cleanups raises awareness, identifies hotspots for debris, and informs policy solutions. 70% of marine debris originated on land and small steps at home can lead to big results. With YOUR help, we can contribute to this important work by removing debris from the restored Little Hell Gate Salt Marsh and Freshwater Wetland on Randall’s Island. Accessible by public transportation and surrounded by the Hudson River estuary, Randall’s Island is the perfect location for a shoreline cleanup. We invite you to roll up your sleeves and come join us! Volunteers will be provided gloves and the tools necessary to complete this project. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes or boots and clothes that can get dirty, as we will be working near water and some damp sand. Volunteers should be comfortable working outdoors and should anticipate projects that are physical in nature, though please note that tasks vary in their physical requirements and volunteers can opt out of any tasks that they are uncomfortable with. Volunteers should bring a reusable water bottle, snacks if you will need them, sunglasses, sunscreen, and layers.
