We are looking for volunteers to assist with Hernando County's first oyster reef deployment! We are in need of boats and volunteers!
When: April 14, 2018 (Saturday)
Time: 10:00 am until 3:30pm
Location: 4170 Pine Dale Court, Hernando Beach, Florida
What to expect: Volunteers will be loading 30-pound bags of recycled oyster shells onto barges and boats at the Hernando County Waterways Building. From here, the shell will be transported to our reef site in Centipede Bay. Volunteers at reef site will unload the bags and arrange accordingly in the water by hand.
What to bring: Oyster shells are sharp! Heavy duty gloves and closed-toe shoes are required. Long sleeve, breathable shirts are recommended since we will be carrying the bags by hand. Volunteers at reef site will be standing knee to waste high in the water, so closed-toe shoes that can get wet will be needed. Wear clothes that can get dirty. Bring sun protection, bug spray, and water. Drinks will be provided. Bagged lunch is recommended.
Boater information: Because of the location of the reef, we are limited to the use of flat-bottom boats and pontoons as our "Shell Taxis". No v-hulls. A tarp to place over deck is recommended because the oysters are sharp and the bags are messy. Boats must be legally operated and up-to-date on all safety required gear and have enough PFDs for everyone on board. Those who volunteer their boats for the use of Shell Taxis must have two people (Captain plus 1) sign up with each boat. You will be contacted after registration is complete for vehicle and boater information so we can give you a launch pass to cover ramp fees. Boat captains must be at least 18 years of age.
Volunteers: We are in need of volunteers to load shell at waterways site (dry land) and at reef site (water). If you cannot get into the water, please notify us so we can plan accordingly.
