A museum and more in the heart of Eugene. Are you interested in history, architecture, or community service? Want to help provide educational programs, lead tours, or assist with special events? The Shelton McMurphey Johnson House has been a landmark in Eugene for more than a century. Although many changes have been made over the years, the House - with its carved and turned exterior woodwork, polygonal tower, ornate open porches, and large bay windows - remains Eugene’s most elaborate example of late-Victorian Queen Anne Revival style architecture.

Our docents guide visitors through the museum, giving them a personal look into the lives of the families that lived and loved this beautiful home at the heart of Eugene. Candlelight Tours tend to be larger groups than our daily tours, and navigating in low light.

Training and materials are provided to assist with learning the history of SMJ and our families. All ages are encouraged. The Museum is 3 floors, so the ability to climb vintage stairs is required.
