WEDNESDAY - Distribution signup sheet
Each Wednesday, Gemma's Angels buys a variety of fresh produce from our Karn's supermarket in Hershey. We then distribute the fresh produce that day to our network of 35+ client sites in either Lebanon, Lancaster or Dauphin counties.
We need a driver and one or two volunteers from early morning to mid-afternoon to buy, load and then distribute the produce.
Volunteers will:
- Load and arrange the fresh produce purchased at Karn's in an orderly and appealing manner.
- Work with our clients who come on board the bus to get our produce. You will help them bag whatever they need, tell them about the day's selection, hand out recipe cards if they are available, etc.
- Keep the fresh produce looking neat throughout the day as our clients pick through it. You will also break down any boxes, replenish the shelves, coordinate your needs with the driver, and generally keep the back of the bus as clean as possible.
- When the day is complete, clean up the bus floor and shelving including sweeping and mopping if needed.
Interacting with the clients of food pantries and introducing them to fruits and vegetables in very important in that they may not have previously consumed. Our plans are to have recipe cards for each type of fruit and vegetable available in both English and Spanish. We do have clients that speak in several languages but we get by for those who speak no English. If you know a few words in Spanish, that is always helpful.
This is a great volunteer activity for office/work groups, church groups, youth/scout groups, etc. Volunteers must be age 18 but can younger if capable of accomplishing the work and if accompanied by someone age 18+. Drivers must be minimum of age 25 and have a good driving history. Families with younger children, however, are very welcome to help with parents along.
If you are scheduling a group larger than three to help, they can follow along and stop and help at the food pantries where we generally stop for at least one to two hours. This is a very rewarding AND fun volunteer opportunity!
Note that in severely inclement weather, we may not operate. You will receive a phone call in those situations.
