The Sound to Narrows is an annual community running event which includes a 12K walk and run, 5K walk and run, 2K junior shuffle and diaper dash.

2K COURSE MARSHALL - This position directs our youngest runners on a short, quick route. Part saftey officer, part traffic cop, part cheerleader. Directing runners and keeping them safe along the route are key. Duties include a proper understanding of the course, being able to stop pedestrian and/or traffic while runners cross. Standing is required. You will be provided a route map.

CAPTAIN-COURSE MARSHALL - This position communicates with the course marshals, has a knowleagable understanding of the 2k, 5k and 12 routes. (training will be provided in April) Will need to attend a captains meeting two weeks prior to race. Will work closely with race director, police liason and ham radio operators.

CLEAN UP CREW - This position cleans up, deconstructs tables, chairs, tents, and whatever else needs to be loaded and cleaned up

CLOTHING CHECK - This position takes the runners belongings, places them in a white garbage sack with clearly marked BIB number on the bag, then arranges the bags on the tennis court in numerical order to be retrieved by the runner post race, they then distribute the bags as the runners come to claim them.

COURSE MARSHALL 5k and 12k - Part safety officer, part traffic cop, part cheerleader. Directing runners and keeping them safe along the route are key. Duties include a proper understanding of the course, being able to stop pedestrian and/or traffic while runners cross. Standing is required. May include erecting a street barricade when you arrive to your station. You may depart, when the SAG (support and gear) wagon passes you and indicates that the last runner/walker has passed. You will be provided a route map.

DIAPER DASH ATTENDANT - This position, hands out the toddler shirts, organizes the start line and facilitates the race.

FINISH LINE - This position ensures that runners have a clear pathway at the finish, it requires much directing of people and keeping the aisle clear for incoming runner traffic. Will direct 2K runners and move down to 5K/12K finish line.

START AREA - This position requires a strong personality and authority, they need to hold the line, inform runners when they can start off the line and maintain safety at the start line.

WATER STATION 1 (12K) - As runners pass by, hand out water to runners. As you hold out cups to runners, hold cup at the bottom so runner can easily grasp cup from you. Continue to pick up cups that runners have discarded on course to maintain safe and clear course for runners.

WATER STATION 2 (12K) - See above. This station is located in Point Defiance Park near the Gig Harbor look out. Volunteers will meet at the entrance to Point Defiance (N. Pearl entrance). Standing required. Wear comfortable shoes and warm clothing. Cups, tables, rakes (for cleaning), garbage bags, and gloves will be provided.

CHEER STATIONS - Cheers on our runners/walkers. Standing, waving, clapping, cheering required. May bring instruments to play, or music. Groups like cheerleaders, soccer teams, boy/girl scout troops are encouraged. Contact us if you have a group.
