"The penultimate and most significant race of the year in Hawaii, the DEMRR occupies a special place in the hearts of Hawaii's veteran bicycle racers."

HBL is helping with course marshals for the Dick Evans Memorial Road Race on August 26, 2018 making sure racers take the correct turns in the Waimānalo back roads. You will be assigned a designated corner to arrive at by 9am, check signage, check and sweep gravel off corners to make it safer, and then stand there to make sure the cyclists go in the correct direction. Good chance to help out other cyclists and to have a first row eat in seeing these fast racers go by! Volunteers will get a free Dick Evans event shirt as well as invitation to the awards/after party.

If you're interested in volunteering for this event, sign-up here. Please INCLUDE YOUR T-SHIRT SIZE after your name for Dick Evans shirts. Example: Chad Taniguchi (L). We will get back to you with more information:) Mahalo!
This is a fun and easy way to give back to the community, and help promote HBL in the community. Email pakbench@gmail.com if you have questions.

PREVIEW OF DETAILS:
We will meet at 9AM sharp on Sunday 8/26 in Waimānalo at the corner of Kalanianaole (main hwy) and Kumuhau St (turn mauka onto Kumuhau and park on the right side on Kumuhau in the cross hatched section 30-50 yards from corner).

1. Please bring:

HBL t-shirt if you have one
hat/umbrella
sunscreen
filled water bottle
folding chair if you like
snack to keep you going
small broom if you can to sweep your section of loose gravel.

2. We will then briefly review instructions, and take our posts heading toward Makapuu along the Waimanalo back roads as noted below. We need to be at our posts by 930am. The first racers should be reaching us after 10am, but they may come sooner.

3. Our jobs are to make sure the racers make the correct turns on the route. The lead riders escorted by motorcycles and cars will be guided where to go, but those following may only have US to rely on to go the right way. So we have to be alert for following and straggler riders, clear in our visual directions (pointing in the correct direction with fingers and hands), and verbal directions if necessary ("go right, go left, go straight" as appropriate). Find a shady but visible spot to wait. Keep scanning ahead for riders. Encourage them verbally when they pass. "Go, go, go Yaaaay! Ride on! Catch them!" or your favorite cheer.

4. We stay on the course in our positions until the sag wagon (The Bike Shop van) comes by and tells us all riders have passed (may be as late as 1p).

5. After the sag wagon comes by you may go home. You are invited to the awards ceremony and party afterwards, TO BE ANNOUNCED.
